About Southern Lumber & Treating Company

Our History

Southern Lumber and Treating Company was founded in 1988 by Evans Sumner and Gary Stovall.  It was designed as a manufacturing facility producing pressure treated lumber to support their then exisiting busineses supplying building materials to the local marine constuction trade and the export markets of the Caribbean Islands.

Since this inception, Southern Lumber has grown to become a major supplier in its own right, supplying treated lumber and piling, boat lifts, and hardware to the marine and golf course construction industries.

Southern Lumber also processes for national exporters, through its state of the art treating facility,  some 15 million board feet of Southern Yellow pine bound for the islands of the Caribbean through the port of Jacksonville and other nearby southeastern ports.

Southern Lumber is an approved supplier for the Florida and Georgia Departments of Transportation.

Evans Sumner, President

Evans Sumner entered the lumber industry after graduating from Georgia Tech in 1970 taking a sales job with a Jacksonville treater.  After a few years in domestic sales he became manager of the export division shipping lumber and plywood to the Caribbean and Europe.  Sumner Forest Products was founded by Evans Sumner in 1986 to continue these exports shipments of southern yellow pine.  In 1988, Sumner and Stovall built Southern Lumber and Treating as a modern, state of the art, wood preserving facility, in north western Jacksonville to supply treated wood to the local and export markets.

Gary Stovall, Vice President

Gary Stovall entered the lumber business after graduating from Jacksonville University on the operations side of a local wood preservers operation.  After several years spent running a lumber yard and treating facility, he moved into sales and later founded First Coast Lumber Company supplying local marine contractors with treated lumber and piling.  In 1988, Gary founded with Evans Sumner Southern Lumber and Treating Company.
